Northwell's secret to facing headwinds

The best way to stay on course is to really understand the headwinds, Jill Kalman, MD, executive vice president, chief medical officer and physician-in-chief at New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, told Becker's.

"When you understand the headwinds, you're proactively preparing for them," she said. "For example, when you look at the cost of doing healthcare, we look for efficiencies to reduce our internal costs. We look at sustainability so our energy costs are less. We look at the workforce and focus on wellness, resiliency, diversity and understanding what our clinicians want."

Attaching the system's mission to the reason why clinicians are working is also powerful.

"When times are tough, people really like to get back to 'why am I doing this?'" Dr. Kalman said. "The 'why' helps people deliver better care. I think when you do that, the message reverberates throughout your organization."
