NYC hospital resumes operations after storm evacuation

New York City-based NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull in Brooklyn welcomed back its first patients Oct. 7 after evacuating the campus following the city's historic rainstorm Sept. 29.

Emergency, labor and delivery, behavioral health and other inpatient units resumed operations Oct. 7. Outpatient services will begin Oct. 10, and about 50 patients transferred to other hospitals within the NYC Health + Hospitals system will also return to Woodhull that day.

While the hospital did not flood, there was damage caused by the heavy rainfall to its engineering and electrical systems, which have now been repaired so that essential services can be restored, the health system said.

"Your contributions have left an indelible mark on our hospital's history," said Gregory Calliste, Woodhull CEO, of employee efforts at the hospital. "We look forward to welcoming our patients and staff who have selected Woodhull as their hospital of choice."

NYC Health + Hospitals operates 11 hospitals in the city, serving more than 1 million patients a year.
