Fire spurs evacuation at Intermountain hospital

Authorities responded to a fire that broke out early Oct. 7 on the women and children's floor at Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. Staff evacuated patients from the area, and no one was injured, a spokesperson with the Salt Lake City-based system confirmed to Becker's Oct. 9.

Local authorities were alerted after a fire alarm went off around 6:30 a.m. that morning and a fire was confirmed on the third floor of the women and children's building. Hospital staff began evacuating patients to other areas of the facility while authorities were on their way.

"The fire is out and the sprinklers and fire suppression system worked as [they] should. Caregivers at the hospital were well prepared to help move patients," a spokesperson said.

Hospital leaders are assessing damage and working with patients and families who were evacuated from the affected area. No other hospital operations were affected.

It's unclear what caused the fire.
