8 healthcare providers named to Fortune's top 500 companies list for 2017

This year's Fortune 500 list featured eight healthcare providers.

To compile the 63rd annual list, Fortune examined each company's total revenue for their respective 2016-2017 fiscal years. Researchers did not consider private companies failing to file financial statements with a government agency; companies incorporated outside the U.S.; U.S. companies consolidated into other domestic or foreign companies; and companies failing to report full financial statements for at least three-quarters of the current fiscal year.

The companies comprising the Fortune 500 represent approximately two-thirds of the United States' global domestic product, with nearly $12 trillion in revenue, $890 billion in profits and $19 trillion in market value.

Here are how eight healthcare providers ranked among the 2017 Fortune 500, from highest to lowest rank.

  1. HCA Healthcare (Nashville, Tenn.) — 63
  2. Community Health Systems (Franklin, Tenn.) — 130
  3. Tenet Healthcare (Dallas) — 134
  4. DaVita (Denver) — 181
  5. Universal Health Services (King of Prussia, Pa.) — 276
  6. LifePoint Health (Brentwood, Tenn.) — 374
  7. Kindred Healthcare (Louisville, Ky.) — 376
  8. Genesis Healthcare (Kennett Square, Pa.) — 454
