State OKs Carthage Area Hospital's proposal to close skilled nursing unit

The New York State Department of Health approved officials' plan to shutter Carthage (N.Y.) Area Hospital's skilled nursing unit.

The hospital's board of directors submitted the plan for state approval in March. The decision to close the unit stemmed from "long-term financial challenges brought by changing state and federal mandates," according to a press release.

As part of the proposal, officials plan to relocate patients to other local facilities whenever possible. Patients and their families have been notified of the closure.

Officials said the unit's 24 employees will be eligible to apply for open positions or transfer to other departments within the hospital.

"Despite our unwavering commitment to quality resident care, it has grown evident in recent years that we are unable to continue to operate the unit," said Rich Duvall, CEO of Carthage Area Hospital. "This decision, while heart-wrenching, will strengthen the long-term viability of Carthage Area Hospital for our communities and the many patients we serve."
