San Francisco officials demand Sutter Health keep long-term unit open

Four San Francisco supervisors demanded Sutter Health keep open its sub-acute unit at San Francisco-based California Pacific Medical Center St. Luke's Campus, according to SFGate.

The plea came during a Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee meeting where unit physicians, nurses and patient relatives said Sutter Health was placing profit ahead of the sick and dying.

Sutter Health plans to close the 40 bed sub-acute unit in October as part of a transition into a new campus, set to open in 2019. The pushback from supervisors, nurses and physicians came as hospital officials announced no sub-acute beds will be available in the new hospital campus.

If the pleas don't reverse the hospital's decision to close the unit, the city of San Francisco will have no beds for sub-acute patients. However, 11 other Bay Area locations offer sub-acute care.
