University of Illinois names executive associate dean of new medical school

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign named Rashid Bashir, PhD, executive associate dean for Urbana-based The Carle Illinois College of Medicine, effective Aug. 16, The News-Gazette reports.

Here are three things to know about Dr. Bashir.

1. Dr. Bashir will work alongside Carle Illinois College of Medicine Dean King Li, MD, to direct and oversee development and operations at the medical school. His appointment is pending approval by the university's board of trustees.

2. Dr. Bashir previously served as the head of bioengineering in the department of electrical and computer engineering since 2013. He also held other leadership roles, including the director of the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory from 2007 until 2013.

3. He reportedly played a large role in developing the medical school's curriculum. The medical school which will open in 2018, the report states.
