Le Bonheur Children's, Rhodes College launch undergraduate research partnership

Memphis, Tenn.-based Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and Rhodes College, also in Memphis, embarked on a comprehensive undergraduate research program for students interested in a career in medicine.

The program, called the Le Bonheur Summer Plus Program, enables students to engage with medical professionals and gain intensive laboratory research experience.

Officials said interns will spend time with providers and interact with patients and their families. Students will also learn proper safety and quality practices as they develop the cognitive reasoning and problem solving skills to care for patients.

Six students have enrolled in the 12-week summer program, which will continue during the 2017-2018 academic school year and into the following summer for an additional 12 weeks. To participate in the program, students were required to submit an application and an essay, participate in an internal interview and engage with Le Bonheur leadership and researchers. The interns are paid for their work during the summer months and receive academic credit.

The interns selected to participate all demonstrated an interest in pediatric neurology or neurosurgery.
