East Carolina University appoints Dr. Mark Stacy dean of medical school

Greenville, N.C.-based East Carolina University board of trustees approved the appointment of Mark Stacy, MD, as dean of the Brody School of Medicine and senior associate vice chancellor for medical affairs of the ECU Division of Health Sciences during a special meeting June 27.

Here are six things to know about Dr. Stacy and his career.

1. In addition to his appointed positions, Dr. Stacy will also serve as a tenured faculty member in the school's department of internal medicine. His appointment will be effective Sept. 1.

2. Dr. Stacy will succeed Paul Cunningham, MD, who stepped down from his position as dean of the medical school last September.

3. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Stacy served as vice dean for clinical research at Durham, N.C.-based Duke University School of Medicine. As vice dean, he created the Duke Office of Clinical Research, which provides oversight for more than 6,800 clinical research projects.

4. During his time at Duke, Dr. Stacy also led the Duke Human Research Protection Program, Duke's Institutional Review Board and the university's Conflict of Interest Committee and Regulatory Affairs Office. He also served as chief of movement disorders and was a professor of neurology in the medical school.

5. Dr. Stacy is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and a member of the American Neurological Association.

6. He earned his medical degree from Columbia-based University of Missouri.
