Officials found the body of a Columbia-based University of South Carolina School of Medicine student, who was reported missing while on a volunteer trip abroad, Monday, according to The State.

A spokesperson for USC said Seth Thomas, a second-year medical student, reportedly died in a hiking accident. He was last seen hiking in the Andes mountains Friday afternoon, officials said.

Mr. Thomas had been volunteering in Peru as part of a medical outreach mission trip with a Peruvian nonprofit, according to the report. He was working in the clinical program through Augusta (Ga.) University.

Augusta officials said the university has been in contact with Mr. Thomas' family, according to the report.
