Cleveland Clinic CEO Dr. Toby Cosgrove to stick with Trump council

Though several CEOs have resigned from President Donald Trump's American Manufacturing Council in reaction to his response to the white supremacist demonstrations in Charlottesville, Va., Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD, will remain on the president's Strategic and Policy Forum, according to The Plain Dealer.

As of Wednesday morning six members of the American Manufacturing Council have resigned. Ken Frazier, CEO of Merck, left Monday "as a matter of personal conscience" and was followed by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, AFL-CIO CEO Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO Deputy Chief of Staff Thea Lee and Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

However, Dr. Cosgrove does not plan on resigning because of Mr. Trump's remarks. Dr. Cosgrove is one of roughly a dozen business leaders serving on the Strategic and Policy Forum, which was organized last winter provide Mr. Trump non-partisan advice on how the government influences economic growth and job creation.

"Dr. Cosgrove believes that it's important to be able to provide input at the highest level of government on healthcare matters," said Eileen Sheil, a spokeswoman for the Cleveland Clinic.

When Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Disney CEO Robert Iger resigned from the Strategic and Policy Forum in April, in protest of Mr. Trump's exit from the Paris climate accords, Dr. Cosgrove elected to remain on the council and said he plans on staying even after his tenure at the Cleveland Clinic ends later this year.

The council has not had a meeting since April and does not have any meetings scheduled in the future.
