7 leadership tips from the real-life Lawrence of Arabia

T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, was a decorated British soldier whose leadership abilities have been well documented in both literature and film.

Listed below are seven of Mr. Lawrence's most important pieces of leadership advice, taken from the book 27 Articles by Mr. Lawrence, according to Business Insider.

1. When leaders start a new role, take time before implementing dramatic change. It is difficult to make up for a bad start, so make sure your first decisions are well thought out.

2. Take the time to learn about your workers as individuals and connect with them on a personal level.

3. Create continuous casual dialogue with your team. They will be more comfortable sharing honest feedback with you if it is not in a formal, scheduled setting.

4. Have healthy relationships with subordinates without growing too close, as personal friendships can compromise your ability to make difficult decisions.

5. Keep a low profile and be active without being too visible. Do not let ego get in the way of your leadership goals.

6. Keep your emotions in check even in heated situations and people will take your words more seriously.

7. Do as little of the team's work as possible and allow yourself to focus on big-picture issues.
